If you know the Poway area, you’ll know there are not many great places to eat in the area. For me, the only place I thoroughly enjoy in the area is Poway Sushi Lounge. For all you Sushi on the Rock fans, this place was started by three former employees, two of which were sushi chefs so the sushi here has a similar quality and taste to it (and that’s a good thing). In fact, they serve many of the same rolls here just with a diferent name. Poway Sushi has never dissapointed me in the 10+ times I’ve been there. I’ll go over some of my favorite dishes on the menu:

Blackened ahi tacos (two crispy won ton shells, shredded cabbage, pepper-seared tuna, salsa fresca, lemon wasabi (Japanese horseradish) – Awesome appetizer. I could mow down about 10 of these.

Lazy Chef Roll (Tempura fried on the outside, topped with spicy aioli and eel sauce and loaded with too many ingredients to mention inside). It is Poway Sushi Lounge’s version of the Kitchen Sink at Sushi on the Rock. The ball and chains favorite roll here. Everyone who I’ve ever tried this with loves it.

El Chapo Roll (spicy krab, cucumber, asparagus, cilantro layered with halibut and avocado, 7 spice powder, green onion, ponzu). Perfect combination of flavors with a nice crunch of asparagus inside.

Chronic Roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, krab, cucumber topped w/ spicy tuna, tempura crunchies, eel sauce) – They serve this same roll at Sushi on the Rock but it’s not on the menu over there.

Tsunami Roll (grilled shrimp, crab, asparagus, avocado, and cucumber layered w/ cajun seared albacore, roasted garlic, chili cilantro ponzu sauce on the side). Awesome seared cajun albacore and the dipping sauce on the side is perfect.

Pepper Seared Ahi Sashimi (ahi coated with black pepper, seared and served over a bed of avocado and sweet onion, garlic ponzu sauce) – It doesn’t get much better than this. If you like pepper seared than make sure you order this dish. If you don’t, order it anyways because I’m telling you to.

Ahi Poke (chef cuts of tuna, sweet onions, sesame seeds, chives, marinated in our special poke sauce, served over a seaweed salad) – Very, very good ahi. The only thing I would add is some fresh avocado slices but still amazingly fresh.

Look, you pretty much can’t go wrong no matter what you order here. The fish is as fresh as I’ve tasted anywhere with the exception of Katana on Sunset Blvd. in L.A. and I promise you will not be dissapointed. A lot of Charger players also go here and I’ve seen a few from time to time. 4 1/2 stars.

While in the “beautiful” city of Indio for a golf tournament I play every year, I needed to find a great spot for dinner after a long hot day of golf. A group of the guys were headed to Fantasy Springs Casino for the buffet because it was nearby. As apetizing as that sounded, I had to pass. So we headed to nearby La Quinta over to LG’s Prime Steakhouse with my buddy Derek who is a big fan of LG’s. Prime is the USDA’s highest designation for beef so hence the name LG’s Prime Steakhouse.

We were there with our wives and all four of us ordered the filets. None of us were dissapointed. These were some incredibly lean, tender and flavorful pieces of meat, just maybe that best steak I ever had. It doesn’t come in a pool of hot butter like Ruth’s Chris, but my heart valves appreciate that. The steaks do come out sizzling on hot plates that keep the steak nice and hot the whole time. If fact, they ask you to cover your shirts with your napkin so you don’t get splattered by the sizzling steaks. One bite and I was in love….seriously awesome filet mignon. If your’e a steak man (or girl), you have to check this place out.

The sides are good too, but nothing that I thought was worth raving about. After all, the steaks are the star of this show. Ceasar salad’s are made for you tableside with fresh ingredients so that’s prety cool. I had to try it and it was pretty good but I’ve had better ceasar dressing and the lettuce wasn’t as cold and crisp as I would have liked. Blue cheese wedge salads are also good there. We also ordered some sweet corn (that wasn’t so sweet) and the garlic mashed potatoes that I do recommend to anyone else except for my wife (the perfect amount of garlic in my opinion).

Price wise, it’s pretty much the same as Ruth’s Chris in case you’re wondering. We spent $250 for 4 of us (that included a bottle of red at $45, 4 filet’s, 4 salads, sides and some ice cream at the end). Overall a great dining experience thanks to how good their filets are. I give it a 4 stars overall.

Looking for great atmosphere combined with a great meal in Las Vegas? Then TAO Restauant should be at the top of your list. Everything here is really great, from the the giant budha statue in the middle of the restaurant, the great looking wait staff (I’m talking about the waitresses, fyi) to the food they serve, TAO is pretty aweseome. The bar/lounge area is a great place to hang out and have drinks and I start out many a nights here when I’m in town. Drinks are not cheap (but what is in Vegas at any nice place?) but they are pretty good. I started loving TAO when I first went to the New York TAO and I still think overall that one is better but I still love TAO Las Vegas. As for the food, the Chilean Sea Bass is just awesome. They have an appetizer and a main course but if you go you have to order one or the other or you will be missing out. Just like Koi Restaurant, TAO also serves a crispy rice with spicy tuna. It’s really good, but not nearly as good as Koi’s. The wasabi crusted filet mignon is excellent and you can’t go wrong with this dish. Best filet I’ve had in a while! There’s nothing I’ve ever had on the menu here that’s not really good so you really can’t go wrong here. If you’re in the mood for it, TAO Nightclub is upstairs right above the restaurant. Overall I give TAO a 4 out of 5 stars.

I was a litle skeptical after reading other reviews about Koi Las Vegas on Yelp. While most of the reviews were positive, many of the reviews were people ripping Koi Las Vegas for not being nearly as good as their New York and Los Angeles counterparts. I’ve never been to either location so I couldn’t compare but what I do know is that I thoroughly enjoyed each and every dish we ordered at Koi.

We started out with an order of edamame like I do every time I go out for sushi. They serve it hot here which I prefer over cold edamame so I was happy about that. But of course I didn’t come here for edamame. Our first dish was the Tuna Tartare, which was mixed with avocado and served on a crispy wonton. The quality of their fish here is just outstanding and you could taste the freshness in each bite. Unfortunately, there weren’t that many bites of this dish because it’s served in very small portions (like pretty much all the dishes here) but I’m okay with that when the food is this good. Plus that allows you to try more dishes and lighten the load in your wallet. Although the tuna tartare was really good, it didn’t exactly satisfy my raging hunger. That’s ok…there were plenty more dishes to come. Our next order was the crispy rice topped with spicy tuna (4 pieces, $15). The combination of flavors and textures made this dish a standout, as the rice really is crispy and cooked in a delicious sauce, the spicy tuna was loaded with flavor and then topped off with a thin slice of fresh, crunchy jalapeno to give it a little bite. I was immediately wishing there were 8 pieces instead of the 4 that came with it. Although saddened that they were now in my belly and not in my mouth, I was still excited about the next order we had coming, the Dragon Roll ($22). Now this was another dish that was a perfect combination of tastes and flavors. Sweet. Spicy. Crunchy. Awesome. It had sweet eel, baked crab, shrimp tempura and tobiko, crispy tempura flakes on top and served with a little eel sauce and spicy sriracha sauce on the side. This dish had 6 pieces so it was one of the more filling dishes of the night as well. We weren’t quite full yet so we had two more dishes coming. Next was the Hamachi Fusion ($15) with soy-citrus and truffle essence and topped with a thin slice of fresh jalapeno which I always love on sushi dishes. Although very thin pieces, the quality of the fish was pretty awesome. This one almost literally melts in your mouth it’s so tender. Another winner. And now I was getting full. We still had one more dish to come, the Kobe Sashimi Roll ($26) with Yamagobo, Avocado and Chipotle Sauce. Although good, it wasn’t inspiring by any means and didn’t compare to the taste and originality of the other dishes we had. Oh yeah, for drinks I had the Pear Martini which the waiter recommended (and yeah, I like girly drinks….you got a problem with that?), and my wife had the white sangria. Both good, but at $15 a pop, I wasn’t exactly sucking these babies down.

Overally, I would highly recommend Koi in Las Vegas. Yes it’s expensive, yes the portion sizes are small but the food was exceptional. I give it 4 stars, one full star off because of price/portion size. I’m sure I’ll be back to Koi, just not after a bad night at the tables.

I love coming to Las Vegas for many reasons. Beautiful scenery wherever you go, the thrill of a great BJ (I’m talking black jack people) and most definitely trying out some of the incredible restaurants that have sprouted up here over the last few years. My favorite hotel to stay at is the Venetian, not just because the rooms are all suites, but also for the incredible collection of restaurants inside the hotel. I’ve been to TAO many times (5 stars) and David Burke (4 stars) and I could easily go back as those places are phenominal but we wanted to try something new this time. The wife and I been wanting to try Lavo for a while (it’s actually in the Palazzo, the Venetian’s newest tower) where we were staying on this trip so we made our way in.

LAVO (described as a Restaurant – Bathhouse – Nightclub)means “to bathe” so there are old bathtubs inside the restaurant and upstairs in the walkway leading into their club. The food has a variety of influences including selections of signature dishes from countries such as Spain, France and Italy. Drinks are expensive but that’s par for the course in any nice Las Vegas restaurant. Their red Sangria is good (but expensive). We ordered a pitcher which was basically about 4 glasses total and that was $48. Pretty steep for Sangria but it was tasty. We started out with the crispy artichoke (good) and the Ludo’s Crudos which was 2 pieces each of very thinkly sliced big eye tuna, yellow tail, salmon and filet. Each had it’s own mixture of toppings to accompany each piece and it was good although a bit too too much olive oil in my opinion. Keep in mind that these are paper thin slices so even though I liked it, at $17 I wouldn’t order it again. It was good but not that good. Now this is hardly even going to put a dent in your stomach so if you’re looking for big portions, run like Asafa Powell…you’re not going to get that here. For our entres, we had the filet and the seabass. The seabass was good but again not great. The filet was just dissapointing. Not exactly soft and tender like it should be. I did a lot more chewing than normal for a filet so I ended up leaving half of it. Overall I gave it 3 stars. The food was just good but not deserving of the $190 bill I ended up with. I’ll be back for drinks but not for another dinner when there are so many great places to choose from. Three stars.

There’s not very many decent places to eat on Miramar Rd. that I care for, but if your in the mood for pasta on the cheap, Pastalini is a winner. The great thing about this place is you get to customize your pasta order exactly like you want it. You start out by choosing your choice of pasta from speghetti, fettucini, bowtie, etc, (they even have a Gluten-free organic whole wheat pasta for an extra $1). You then select which type of sauce you want and they have about 6 different sauces from regular tomato sauce to a tequila lime cream sauce). Next you select from a choice of grilled chicken breast, grilled shrimp, fish, pomegranate meatballs, or blackened tofu. Last you select from a variety of fresh vegetables including grilled green and yellow zucchini, mushrooms, fresh tomato, onions, jalapenos, asparagus spears, and plenty more to choose from. Next they throw it into a pan with a little olive oil, garlic, red pepper and parseley and cook it right in from of you. According to a sign they had up, they apparently cook their pasta in filtered water — and with the San Diego water quality that’s actually great to know. The portion size is healthy and their pasta bowls are $6.
